A representative of SteepleJack Brewing was not immediately available for commentary upon What Now Portland’s request.
According to the New School Beer article, the new location is to open sometime in the summer of this year.
“2020 founded SteepleJack Brewing is not putting the brakes on its mission to bring approachable beer in a vast variety of styles to the people. Since day one, co-owner Brody Day has expressed his commitment to bring easy low-cost access to quaffable, often low abv, and often less popular beer styles like a dark mild ale to the public.”
“The new SteepleJack Brewing on Hawthorne might be their most accessible point yet, a gutted Bank of America branch at 3757 SE Hawthorne Blvd. that will become a taphouse and small arcade, with 4 food trucks, and the launch of their new Harder Day Coffee Co. concept.”
“The Bank of America Hawthorne branch closed in December 2022 after suspected arson, and SteepleJack has already begun further demo of the 1952 mid-century modern building to bring it down to the wood joists and rebuild it with reclaimed wood from SteepleJack Broadway’s 110+-year-old church building.”
“So while it won’t have the same hallowed aesthetic, custom elements like a handcrafted tile back bar will fulfill the artisan feel they want to sustain throughout all locations. The bar itself will not serve liquor, at least not to start, but plenty of SteepleJack’s signature beers, including 2 cask engines will be present,” the article added.
SteepleJack describes its mission statement on the company website, stating, “There’s a reverence that comes with being a Steeplejack. A belief that an inanimate thing can have life. A desire to work with your hands to make things better than they were before. An expectation that people deserve places to gather that are safe, sound, and welcoming.”
“A feeling that the best things happen at the intersection of art and science. A belief that the old ways should be honored, coupled with a fearlessness that inspires doing things others shy away from. These are the same tenets that led us to start this brewery. And the same convictions we use to guide our work.”
“Here at Steeplejack, good beer isn’t just about what’s in the glass. It’s about where it’s served and who you share it with. Our town square just happens to be a piece of Portland’s rich history. We are at our best when we create places where people want to explore, discover, exchange ideas, and celebrate.”
